the teabaggers or teapugNUTS were all for the government expansion and rising deficits under Bush the MM. And we all know it will be gop business as usual if the teabaggers get anyone in Congress. Are people really THAT damn stupid?!?
The last sentence got me wondering; Are people really damn stupid? Why does it seem that we as a society are increasingly losing the ability to think for ourselves?
When Christine O'Donnell made it abundantly clear that she didn't know what was in the first amendment to the freaking Constitution (that she will have to swear to uphold if elected) she was lambasted by many. The shocker was that she was actually defended by some. When Sarah Palin was running for Vice-President, she was asked what Supreme Court decisions she didn't agree with. She basically just flashed an empty smile and blathered on about nothing (O'Donnell did the same). Hell, when Sarah Palin was asked what magazine she read, she was stumped. Again she was dragged over the coals by some, but not as many as she should have been. I mean, damn: what freaking magazine do you read? Answer: Yeah, I got nothing. Her defense was this was all "gotcha journalism." Like this crap wouldn't have come up at any point. But, instead of these two being ostracized for being morons, they are popular as hell! Sarah Palin has more face time than the guy who beat her and is VP right now. She gets paid more to do one speech than most of us will make this year. She has followers who hang her every un-fact-checked word. It is like some weird, twisted celebration of ignorance. I suspect a conversation with one would go like this:
Interviewer: "Hey, why are you here? Do you realize Sarha Palin is the dumbest person in America?"
Palin fan: "I think she is smart."
Interviewer: "Correction: She was the dumbest person in America."
I have actually been told by an actual living breathing person, who has the capacity to form a sentence, that "Sarah Palin is really smart." Which makes me think that person to be not so smart. Just people liking SP is not enough to call a majority of people stupid though. McCain and she did lose, mind you. But since Obama has taken office, I have heard misinformation everywhere I turn. People believe Obama is Muslim. People believe the Health Care Reform law is Socialism. People believe Obama caused the recession. People believe we are going to succumb to Sharia Law. People are believing the stupidest stuff.
How did this freaking happen? Modern media has a great deal to do with this. When I say "modern media" I am not talking about just what you get on your TV or radio. It is e-mail, web-sites, as well as TV and radio. Do me a favor, open your e-mail and search for all messages with a FW: in them (I'll wait)... If they are making any sort of political claim you can bet that 99% of them are blatant lies. You can also bet that the person forwarding them; A. Believes the lie they just forwarded you, and B. Did not check to see if the claim was correct. This is a nearly perfect way to slander someone and have zero accountability. I can make up an e-mail message stating that "Christine O'Donnell wants to confiscate all vibrating dildos!" and it will get forwarded, and forwarded, and forwarded until any evidence that I was the one who made it up is lost to the internet. Also, these count on the person who received it to be lazy. Either too lazy to look up the information, or too lazy to reply to the erroneous information. Hint: If you see this line in a forward; "I checked this on Snopes and it is true!!!11!1" What they are really saying is; "Oh please, please do not look this up because it is total BS!!!11!1" The crappy thing about this is it freaking works! We have become too lazy to be bothered to check if what we are forwarding is real or not. If it sounds true, it probably is. No need to check, right? (Christine O'Donnell doesn't like masturbation, I bet she is trying to get rid of vibrators! Consider this forwarded!! *click*)
So, your email account is making you stupid. Web-sites can be just as bad. Anyone can make a blog and spout off whatever they want, fact-checking be damned! Many times web-sites will echo the same falsities that you will see in a forwarded email. Which just cements the stupidity. So, if a person gets an e-mail message stating that Obama is a Socialist, and heritage.org echos that, then to add the cherry on top, Fox News says it on TV. Well, it must be true right? Well no, you have been duped. Congratulations. It goes a little deeper that that though. The various conservative media outlets tell their listeners that any other media outlet is lying to them. Any TV channel that is not Fox is part of the "mainstream media" and is a big fat lying doodie head. Same with many conservative web-sites. They claim that the rest of the world is "liberal media" and they are restoring balance. This makes their listeners eventually reject all other news sources as "liberal" and accepting only what is spoon fed to them by the only channel/web-site that is fair and balanced. CBS stumps Palin? Well, they are part of the MSM and have a "liberal bias." It doesn't matter if they had video of her acting like a complete imbecile; they are still wrong. It is almost like brainwashing.
Here is the kicker, the mainstream media isn't biased. If they were, why are they already claiming victory for the Republicans well before the election? Why is it that most of the stories that were against the Republicans have pretty much only been aired on MSNBC? Because the mainstream media does not have a freaking bias, that's why! So, what we have is a very loud and boisterous conservative media conglomerate shouting lies or stretching the truth to the breaking point. We have a mainstream media outlet that, even while being chastised for being too liberal, is pretty moderate. Now, when the MSM runs a story that makes the Republicans look good, they get some credit. If the run a story that either makes Republicans look bad, or Democrats look good though, they are being biased and you should turn to Fox for the real story. Radio? Well, I don't know about you, but I can find Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly on at any time. But there is not one liberal radio station here. None. I have found most places to be this way, especially in the mid-west.
These all compound to make us less informed. It seems as though we have fallen into the Republican media trap. I guess no one said they were stupid.
